WHAT IS ABACAVIR AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR:

Abacavir sulfate (ABAMUNE) is a nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitor (NRTI), indicated for the treatment and prevention of HIV/AIDS.

Like other nucleoside analog reverse-transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs), abacavir is used together with other HIV medications, and is not recommended by itself. 

Abacavir is also used in the treatment of mild hepatic impairment. The use of abacavir is contraindicated in moderate to severe hepatic impairment.

Abacavir Dosage

Abacavir should be taken orally at about the same time each day, either with or without food. Abacavir tablets should be swallowed whole with water. The tablets should not be opened, broken, or chewed. The dosage of abacavir is given according to age and body weight.

The tablet form of Abacavir is available in 300mg and the oral solution form is accessible in 20mg per ml.

Storage and Handling

Care should be exercised in the handling of ABAMUNE. ABAMUNE tablets should not be opened or crushed. Store permitted between 20-25°C (68-77°F).

Drug Interactions of Abacavir Sulfate

This drug is not taken with other medications that contain alcohol, methadone, and orlistat. Abacavir should not be taken along with other medications that contain substitute or part of abacavir. There are a few interactions that are mentioned below:

  • The serum concentration of abacavir may be decreased when used along with protease inhibitors such as tipranavir.
  • Ethanol increased the level of abacavir in the body.
  • Both alcohol dehydrogenase and glucuronidation metabolize abacavir in the human body.
