What is Atracurium Besylate and for what it is used:

Atracurium Besylate is used, as an adjunct to general anaesthesia, to facilitate endotracheal intubation and to offer skeletal muscle relaxation during surgery or mechanical ventilation. The drug atracurium besylate can be used most advantageously if muscle twitch response to peripheral nerve stimulation is monitored.

Dosage

The standard dose of atracurium besylate injection should be administered intravenously. The atracurium besilate should not be given intramuscularly. Intramuscular administration may be responsible for tissue irritation.

Warnings And Precautions
  • Should avoid the use of atracurium in patients with known hypersensitivity to it.
  • The atracurium besilate injection should not be used before unconsciousness has been induced.
  • Atracurium injection must not be mixed in the same syringe, or administered simultaneously through the same needle, with alkaline solutions (e.g., barbiturate solutions).
  • Should not use atracurium ampoule during pregnancy.
    Appropriate caution should be imposed when atracurium injection is administered to nursing women.
How Supplied/Storage and Handling:

Should exercise care in the handling of ATRACURIUM BESYLATE. Injections should not be opened or broken. Refrigerate, 2°C to 8°C (36°F to 46°F). To protect the atracurium ampoule from the light, store it in the original carton until the time of use.

  • The medication atracurium besylate is potentiated by the isoflurane and by enflurane anaesthesia, and marginally potentiated by the halothane.
  • In common with other existing non-depolarising neuromuscular blocking agents, the magnitude and/or duration of a non-depolarising neuromuscular block may be enhanced as a result of interaction with: Antibiotics, Antiarrhythmic drugs, Diuretics, Ketamine, Lithium salts, and Ganglion blocking agents.
  • The prior administration of suxamethonium does not increase the duration but quickens the onset and may increase the depth of neuromuscular blockade induced by atracurium besylate. As with other non-depolarising neuromuscular blocking agents, it is advisable to await evidence of recovery from the suxamethonium-induced neuromuscular block before administering atracurium besylate.
  • Rarely, certain medications may aggravate or unmask latent myasthenia gravis or actually induce a myasthenic syndrome; increased sensitivity to atracurium besylate would be consequent on such a development. Such medications include beta-blockers (propranolol, oxprenolol), various antibiotics, antiarrhythmic drugs (procainamide, quinidine), trimethaphan, steroids, chlorpromazine, phenytoin, lithium, and antirheumatic drugs (chloroquine, D-penicillamine).
