Efavirenz is a non-nucleoside reverse transcriptase inhibitor, Emtricitabine is a nucleoside analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor and Tenofovir disoproxil is also a nucleotide analog reverse transcriptase inhibitor indicated for the treatment of HIV/AIDS.

Teevir is a combination (fixed dose) of efavirenz, emtricitabine, and tenofovir disoproxil. It can be used by itself or together with other antiretroviral medications.

Teevir should be taken orally at about the same time each day, at or before bedtime on an empty stomach in order to reduce side effects. Teevir tablets should be swallowed whole with water. The tablets should not be opened, broken, or chewed.

  • Most common side effects of Teevir (efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir) include headache, trouble sleeping, sleepiness, and unsteadiness.

  • Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate increases didanosine concentrations. So use with caution and patient should be monitored for evidence of didanosine toxicity (pancreatitis, neuropathy) when coadministered.
  • Teevir is not recommended for patients with moderate or severe hepatic impairment.
  • In adults and also in pediatric patients with efavirenz, cases of convulsions have been observed. Generally, this observation is with known medical history of seizures. Caution should be taken in such patients who are with a history of seizures.
  • Patients who are receiving concomitant anticonvulsant medications primarily metabolized by the liver, such as phenytoin and phenobarbital, may require periodic monitoring of plasma levels.
Supplied/Storage and handling

Care should be exercised in the handling of TEEVIR. Teevir capsules should not be opened or crushed. Keep this medication in the tightly closed container. Store permitted between 15-30°C (59-86°F).

Interactions of Efavirenz Emtricitabine and Tenofovir
  • Drug InteractionLopinavir/ritonavir and Darunavir with ritonavir have been shown to increase the concentrations of Tenofovir.
  • Tenofovir DF is a substrate of P-glycoprotein (Pgp) and breast cancer resistance protein (BCRP) transporters. When tenofovir DF is coadministered with an inhibitor of these transporters, an enhancement in the absorption may occur.
  • People with strong hypersensitivity to the efavirenz, should be avoided the consumption of efavirenz/emtricitabine/tenofovir.
