WHAT IS ERLOTINIB AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR:

Erlonat tablets is a specific tyrosine kinase inhibitor, indicated for the treatment of Pancreatic Cancer and Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC).

  • Specifically, it is used to treat locally advanced as well as metastatic non-small lung cancer after the failure of at least one prior chemotherapy regimen.
  • It is also used for the Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer either with EGFR exon 21 or EGFR exon 19 deletion substitution mutation which has spread to other parts of the body.
  • Patients with locally advanced as well as metastatic non-small lung cancer may take this medication with the combination of gemcitabine as a first-line treatment.

Erlotinib Dosage

Erlotinib 150mg or Erlonat 150 mg should be taken by the mouth because it intended to have a systematic effect, reaching/spreading different parts of the body via the bloodstream.

For better results, it should be taken at the same time each day with or without food. Never try to chew these tablets, neither crush nor split before swallowing.

Treatment should be continued until the disease progression or an unacceptable toxicity occurs.

Erlotinib side effects

The most common adverse reactions may include fatigue, loss of appetite, partial hair loss, diarrhea, mouth sores, vomiting, rashes, weight loss, dry skin, eye irritation, weight decrease, infection, edema, pyrexia, and constipation, bone pain, dyspnea, stomatitis and myalgia.

Some rare effects may also appear including ocular disorder and skin toxicity.

Warnings and Precautions
  • Before taking this medication make sure you have not a history of stomach bleeding, eye problems, Liver and Kidney diseases, Lung or breathing problems.
  • Erlonat must be strictly avoided to use in pregnant women unless it’s very critical circumstances. This medication may harm an unborn child.
  • This medication is not recommended while the time period of breastfeeding. Talk to your physician/doctor for alternate options.
  • Cigarette smoking has been shown to reduce drug exposure. Patients should be advised to stop smoking. If any patient continuously smoking, a cautious enhanced in the dose of the tarceva, not exceeding 300 mg can be considered, during the monitoring the patient’s safety.
  • In the event of an acute onset of new or progressive unexplained pulmonary symptoms such as dyspnea, cough, and fever, this drug therapy should be interrupted pending diagnostic evaluation. If ILD is diagnosed, medicine should be discontinued and appropriate treatment instituted as needed.
  • Erlonat therapy should be interrupted and appropriate measures should be taken to intensively rehydrate the patient. Periodic monitoring of renal function and serum electrolytes is recommended in patients at risk of dehydration.
  • Safety as well as efficacy of this medicine have not been specified Or established in patients with the Non Small Cell Lung Cancer whose tumors have other EGFR mutations.
  • This drug is not recommended for use in combination with platinum-based chemotherapy.
  • Patients should be advised that nail and hair disorders, including hirsutism and brittle and also loose nails, have been observed.
  • Patients should be advised, promptly contact their doctor or healthcare provider if they observe or develop eye signs or symptoms, red-eye, lacrimation, light sensitivity, blurred vision, eye pain, or changes in vision.
  • Advise patients that this drug can increase the risk of gastrointestinal perforation or fistula and to seek immediate medical attention for severe abdominal pain.
Supplied/Storage and handling

Care should be implemented in the proper handling of Erlonat (Erlotinib). Erlonat tablets should not be opened or crushed.
