Lopimune(Lopinavir Ritonavir combination) is an HIV-1 protease inhibitor indicated for use in combination with other antiretroviral agents for adult and pediatric (14 days and older) patients with HIV-1 infection.

Lopinavir and Ritonavir Dosage

Lopinavir and Ritonavir HIV medicine should be taken orally at about the same time each day,  either with or without food. Lopimune tablets should be gulped whole with water. The tablets should not be chewed, broken or crushed.

Lopinavir and Ritonavir side effects
  • Most common side effects of Lopinavir-Ritonavir tablets include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, abdominal pain, loss of appetite, itchy skin, jaundice and dark-colored urine.
  • While on the treatment with lopinavir/ritonavir, hyperlipidemia (both hypertriglyceridemia and hypercholesterolemia) and Raised liver enzymes commonly have been observed.
  • Changes in body fat may occur in some people who take antiretroviral therapy. These changes can be an increased amount of fat in the upper neck as well as back.
  • Loss of fat may occur from the arms, legs and face. The cause and long-term health effects of this condition is not specified.
Warnings and Precautions
  • Should be monitored liver function before as well as during the therapy, specifically in patients with hepatitis B and C, or marked transaminase elevations.
  • Always practice safe sex by using appropriate protection option such as polyurethane or latex condoms in order to lower the possibility of sexual contact with semen, vaginal secretions or blood.
  • Females with HIV-1 should avoid breastfeeding because HIV-1 can be passed to the baby.
  • People who carried heart disease (structural), conduction system abnormalities (preexisting), cardiomyopathies or ischaemic heart disease must use the combined lopinavir ritonavir with caution.
  • 8 March 2011 the U.S. FDA (Food and Drug Administration) tells the healthcare professionals about the serious health problems that have been reported in premature babies who were receiving the combined medication lopinavir/ritonavir as an oral solution. It was probably because of its content named propylene glycol. FDA suggested that the use of this drug should be avoided in premature babies.
  • QT interval prolongation and isolated cases of torsade de pointes have been reported although causality could not be established. Avoid use in patients with congenital long QT syndrome, those with hypokalemia, and with other drugs that prolong the QT interval.
  • Patients may develop hyperglycemia, new onset or exacerbations of diabetes mellitus, immune reconstitution syndrome and redistribution/accumulation of body fat.
  • Patients should be monitored, their triglycerides elevations and total cholesterol prior to the therapy and also periodically thereafter.
Supplied/Storage and handling

Care should be exercised in the handling of Lopinavir-Ritonavir. Lopinavir and Ritonavir tablets should not be opened or crushed. Store permitted between 15-30°C (59-86°F).

Interactions of Lopinavir ritonavir

The combined Lopinavir ritonavir is anticipated to have varying degrees of interaction with other medications that are also CYP3A and/or P-gp substrates.
