Mitomycin is an antimetabolite injection used in the treatment of glaucoma filtration surgery, pancreatic cancer, stomach cancer. It is also used in the treatment of several disorders that are related to the growth and multiplication of cells.

Mitomycin Injection Dosage

Mitomycin injection must be given I.V intravenously only, care is recommended in order to avoid the extravasation of the compound. Each vial contains 0.2 mg of mitomycin and 0.4mg of mannitol in 1:2 ratio. For its use it is mixed with 1 ml of sterile water this is shaken to dissolve and then injected.

Mitomycin side effects

The most common side effects of mitomycin include fever, anorexia, nausea, vomiting. Other side effects are blurring of vision, headache, confusion, drowsiness, fatigue, edema, syncope, thrombophlebitis, hematemesis, pain, and diarrhea.

Warnings and Precautions
  • High dose of mitomycin 40 mg or mitomycin 10 mg may cause cell death as it is toxic to cells.
  • Mitomycin is not recommended to replace appropriate surgery or radiotherapy.
  • Mitomycin should not be used in patients who have an idiosyncratic reaction or demonstrated hypersensitivity.
  • Patients taking mitomycin must be observed for the evidence of renal toxicity.
  • Mitomycin should be avoided in patients who carried a serum creatinine.
