WHAT IS OCTREOTIDE AND WHAT IT IS USED FOR:

Octreotide is a more potent inhibitor of growth hormone, glucagon, and insulin than the natural hormone, indicated for the treatment of acromegaly and gigantism. 

Octreotide is also used in mild cases of glucagonoma when surgery is not an option. 

Octreotide is also used in the treatment of refractory hypoglycemia in neonates and sulphonyl urea induced hypoglycemia in adults.

Most common side effects of octreotide (adverse reactions) include vomiting, diarrhea, headache, breathing difficulties, gallbladder stones, decreased thyroid hormone levels, decreased heartbeat, etc.

Warnings and Precautions
  • Monitoring of vitamin B12 levels is recommended during octreotide therapy.
  • If you know that you have gallstones now, or have had them in the past; tell your doctor, as prolonged use of Octreotide may result in gallstone formation. Your healthcare provider may wish to check your gallbladder periodically.
  • Patients having problems with blood sugar levels, either too high (diabetes) or too low (hypoglycaemia). When the Octreotide is used to treat bleeding from gastro-oesophageal varices; monitoring of blood sugar level is mandatory.
  • Do not breast-feed while using Octreotide. It is not known whether Octreotide acetate passes into breast milk.

Drug interaction of OCTREOTIDE
  • The concomitant use of octreotide injection with cyclosporine may be responsible for decreasing blood levels of cyclosporine and result in transplant rejection.
  • Octreotide blocks the secretion of insulin and glucagon. Therefore, monitor the blood glucose levels when Octreotide is initiated or when the dosages are altered and anti-diabetic therapy needs to be adjusted accordingly.
  • The concomitant use of bradycardia-inducing medicines (e.g., beta-blockers) may have an additive effect on the reduction of heart rate related to octreotide. The adjustment dose of concomitant medication may be necessary.
