A rare disease is one that only affects a small portion of the global population or only affects a limited number of individuals. A rare disease is not specifically defined, but as its name suggests, it is one for which there is a lack of a market size sufficient to attract support and funding for the development of remedies.
If we apply the international estimate of 6% to 8% of the population being affected by rare diseases in India, we have between 72 and 96 million persons affected by rare diseases in the country, which is a significant amount, according to the National Policy of Treatment of Rare Disease. The majority of rare diseases are discovered to be hereditary. Over 7,000 uncommon diseases are known, affecting about 400 million individuals globally. Half of these disorders, which have genetic roots in 80% of cases, afflict youngsters. Only 5% of known rare diseases have one or more approved therapies, making persons with rare diseases collectively one of the greatest underserved patient communities in the world.
Less than 300 medicines are available to address the 7000–8000 uncommon diseases. Less than 1 in 10 individuals receive treatment specifically for their disease, and around 95% of rare diseases have no approved treatments. Due to the lack of information accessible, rare diseases constitute a serious and considerable hazard to public health both globally and in India. Regarding public health and scientific understanding, the topic of uncommon disease is itself complex, less well-known, and constantly changing. The Indian government has implemented a number of programmes under the NPRD to raise awareness of the condition and provide information on its symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment.
