Drug interaction of Trientine
  • In general, avoid mineral supplements since they may inhibit the absorption of Trientine.
  • Iron deficiency may occur, mainly in children and menstruating or pregnant women, or as a result of the reduced copper diet recommended for Wilson’s disease. If necessary, iron can be prescribed in short courses, but since iron and Trientine each block the absorption of the other, 2 hours should elapse between the uses of Trientine and iron.
  • It is important that Trientine be taken on an empty stomach, at least 60 minutes before meals or 120 minutes after meals, and at least 60 minutes apart from any other drug, food, or milk. This permits maximum absorption and decreases the likelihood of inactivation of the drug by metal binding in the gastrointestinal tract.
